Lab Diamonds vs. Moissanite

Lab Diamonds vs. Moissanite

Looking for the right gemstone for your next jewelry piece? If you want the classic look then diamonds or diamond simulants are the way to go.
The two options we recommend most often are lab diamonds or Moissanite diamonds. Here's what you need to know.

What are lab diamonds?

Lab diamonds are created in a lab using carbon dioxide molecules which are exposed to extreme heat and pressure. It has all the same physical and chemical properties of a mined diamond, without creating environmental damage or relying on exploitative labor practices.

It's almost impossible to tell the difference between a lab grown diamond and a mine diamond without a special tool known as a loupe. The loupe lets the assessor see if there is a lasered inscription on the girdle of the diamond which identifies its lab grown source.

Many of our clients choose lab grown diamonds because they want to experience true diamond luxury. Because they cost 50% to 70% less than natural diamonds, they are well within the financial reach even of people who are just starting out.

What is Moissanite?

Natural moissanite is a silicon-carbide gem that comes from meteorites. It looks similar to a diamond, similar enough for the stone to be known as a diamond simulant. Most Moissanite is lab grown. They are similar to diamonds in hardness, scoring a 9.25 on the Mohs Hardness Scale whereas diamonds score at 10.

They do look a little different under light, throwing rainbow patterns instead of the clear white sparkle of a diamonds.

Some people choose them because they enjoy the rainbow sparkle effect, others choose them because they are a more cost-effective option even than lab grown diamonds. Few of our clients choose them because most of our clients want genuine diamonds.

Can you really tell the difference?

Yes. If a person knows their gemstones they'll be able to spot moissanite with ease. They'll know you don't have a genuine diamond ring, bracelet, or other jewelry piece.

Moissanite is good everyday wearable jewelry, but it's not fine jewelry, and it doesn't transition as well from day to night. Lab-grown diamond jewelry will serve you well in any situation.
